About the project In co-operation with Special School nr 2 Project: Special School Set between the two buildings of the Astra Library Complex this magnificent building which serves as a school for deaf and dumb children will host exhibitions, especially of children. In the courtyard in front of the school there will be a tent with a permanent exhibition between the 6th and the 31st August 2007. From the workshops in the village of Rusciori, but also from children who want to paint there at the school their works will be exhibited for all to see which talents are slumbering in the youngest members of Europe. From the 15th August until the 1st September the 10 x 12 meter stage of the City Hall will be the venue for many of the performing arts events including theatre and music, Romanian and foreign bands alike. Project:Astra Park and The Street Arts The courtyard of the Special School nr. 2 is situated in the Astra Park behind the old Boulevard Hotel. We will host an info-meeting point for street artists travelling to Sibiu. We will have information on cheap accommodation, tent-pitching possibilities, cheap food, good places to perform etc. The shady Astra Park, in the centre of all these activities is optimal to exchange ideas in the street-arts, or simply chill out and practice. In co-operation with Friedrich Teuch Haus Project: Friedrich Teuch Haus Situated at the end of the Astra Park in the middle of town this location is still an undiscovered jewel for most visitors to town. From a medieval atmosphere at the gate entrance you enter an open, but serene courtyard where you can immediately shrug off the hustle and the bustle of the city stress. A modern bookshop with an enchanting cafĂŠ to relax and browse through a few books, and you feel quite human again. In the courtyard from the 6th August until the 31st August sculptors will be working and creating their art, visible for all to see the daily progress of their skills. A wonderful moment of timelessness creating an atmosphere of determination and power, but also of poetry and origin. The sculptor creates a moment of unity with nature. As is the very fate of nature to decompose, the sculptor symbolically forges a constructive cohabitation, elevating the art to an absolute form and poetry for the spirit. The courtyard and bookshop will also host events in literature, theatre and music to compliment the cardinal points of the arts, thus allowing visitors an insight to many wonderful creative happenings. The Erasmus bookshop in the Friedrich-Teutsch Haus will be the host for weekly literature events. Every Thursday Sibiu’s writers will stage a magnificent display of the written art. In co-operation with Astra NEW Library Project: Stairway to Joy NEW Astra Library (Astra Library) Situated at the end of the Astra Park it is a wonderful and magnificent building, a modern counter-point to the old Astra Library. Guests can enjoy a stunning view of Sibiu/Hermannstadt. Every week on Wednesday the library guests will be enchanted with a high caliber literature program to compliment the new utility library, which also caters for Internet and digital information resources, the programme will be varied and manifold Project: Sculpture in metal Under the direction of European House of Arts, sculptors and blacksmiths from different nations will join together to create a fantastic work for Sibiu 2007. 4 xylophones in steel and wood will be created to toll the harmonious sound of four major ethnic groups of Transylvania, of Sibiu; Romanian, German, Hungarian and Roma. They will construct the xylophones in Rusciori and then on the 1 September there will be a sound concert with them in Sibiu. The place chosen for the concert is the Astra Park. The idea is to combine the historical centre with all its tradition and heritage with a modern artwork created especially for, and performed before the very eyes of the inhabitants and visitors to Sibiu/Hermannstadt. In co-operation with The Kinderbauernhof in Rusciori Project:Cultural integration in the villages around Sibiu During the 4 week period 3rd August – 2nd September the Kinderbauernhof in the village of Rusciori will host all the artists involved in the events from European House of Arts. They will be a part of the picturesque village life as well as the Cultural Capitals vibrant presence in 2007. There will be an alternate, but continuous group of artists dwelling in the village during the day to build up a cultural confidence among the remotest of the villagers; and those that may never venture to the events of Sibiu/Hermannstadt under normal circumstances can feel and understand more of the importance and presence of cultural events. They can integrate this into their every day understanding of the quality of life and thus feel the international cultural presence brought to them by the European Cultural Capital, their cultural capital Sibiu/hermannstadt. The artists will not only help share and experience this presence, but also entice the inhabitants to take part in workshops of different kinds. Painting, sculpturing, dancing, music and theatre are artistic values we as artists can apply and share to bring out the social vein in the participating people and it is indeed the participants who will finally create the real values of European integration with joy, happiness and desire. The pillars of cultural integration are clearly stated here: Integration, participation, and creation. With the Kinderbauernhof we have found a strong partner along with the Mayor of Sura Mica/Rusciori to not only reduce resentments in the different ethnic groups, but together assist in the integration of the villages into the local and international, European cultural and social life. It is also the aim of the project to bring the children out from Sibiu/Hermannstadt and the other surrounding towns and villages for the day to create a platform for the children to create and design their art and ideas on the Cultural Capital, or simply have fun with the village surroundings. |
